Lee Hangyong began his career at the Economic Research Institute of the Bank of Korea, where he worked from 2003 to 2004. He then joined the Korea Development Institute (KDI) as a Junior Research Fellow, contributing to the institute’s research efforts from 2004 to 2007.

In 2007, Lee Hangyong transitioned to academia as a Professor of Financial Economics at Hanyang University, where he taught and conducted research until 2024. He currently serves as the President of the Korea Institute of Finance, while simultaneously acting as Chairman of the Council on International Financial Cooperation.


Throughout his career, Lee Hangyong has held several significant positions. Since 2023, he has been a member of the Financial Development Committee at the Financial Services Commission (FSC), and since 2022, he has chaired the Board of the New Start Fund. He is also a Non-Executive Director at the Korea Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC).


Lee Hangyong has made substantial contributions in various advisory capacities. He served as Vice President of the Korea Money & Finance Association (KMFA) from 2017 to 2018, and from 2016 to 2019, he was a member of the Credit Counseling & Recovery Service (CCRS). He also chaired the Macro-Economic Sub-Committee of the Self-Evaluation Committee at the Ministry of Economy and Finance from 2016 to 2022. Additionally, in 2013, he was a visiting professor at the University of Texas at Austin.


Lee Hangyong earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia University in 2003, after completing his bachelor's degree in International Economics in 1988 and his master's degree in 1991 at Seoul National University.
